CARBON FOOTPRINTING
SustainableProduction has developed a bespoke carbon footprinting tool for film, TV and live event production. The term 'carbon footprint' has been adopted for the amount of carbon dioxide (usually in tonnes) being emitted by an organization or activity. Measuring the carbon footprint of a production enables us to identify the emissions associated with each respective area. It also creates a baseline from which we can measure the success of reductions implemented via follow-up footprints on future productions.

PRE-PRODUCTION AUDIT
We carry out a detailed survey of the potential environmental impact of a production. The study examines filmed production and its supply chain - location energy & waste, hotel accommodation, cast & crew catering, cast & crew travel, equipment transport, marketing and merchandise. 

A detailed survey of a production enables us to identify where our clients can cost effectively reduce their environmental impact. Often the biggest environmental wins are made in the planning stages of a production so the earlier this process is implemented the better, however, due to the nature of film production, we are used to being called in to consult at all stages of a production.

IMPLEMENTATION AND TARGET SETTING
Once we have undertaken the carbon footprint and pre-production survey, we submit the report to the client and discuss which recommendations can be incorporated into the production. We have environmental solutions to all areas of filmed production. Some of these follow:

• Creating an environmental contract for all suppliers to ensure that they take every reasonable step possible to reduce the environmental impact of the services they provide.
• Working with location managers on energy efficiency & waste reduction
• Working with studios & their waste providers on improving recycling rates.
• Biodiesel generators.
• Sustainable set design.
• Promoting the use of environmentally efficient transport for cast, crew and equipment.
• Booking hotels with good environmental policies that are found close to locations.
• Supporting caterers in the sourcing of organic, local and seasonal and Fairtrade produce
• Supporting caterers in the use of reusable plates and cutlery and ensuring any disposable items are made of recyclable materials.
• Sustainable procurement of environmentally efficient equipment.

OFFSET PROGRAM
Even with best practice there will always be some greenhouse gas emissions produced. At SustainableProduction our primary focus is on generating measurable results in helping our clients reduce their environmental impact, however, clients often choose to offset their remaining unavoidable CO2 emissions. Therefore, in addition, we are happy to advise on which offset providers are the most ethical and transparent to invest in and are continually monitoring the marketplace for the most effective schemes.

CARBON COACHING
Should clients choose to promote their achievements, we ensure they are properly briefed on climate change and the efficiencies implemented on their productions. This includes providing media training for staff and cast, reduction strategies and sustainable procurement for the production office.
